Cave No.3 (Cave of Ling Yan Si) 471-494 A.D.
Originally, the biggest cave at Yungang should be designed as a large pogoda, but it had not finished during Northern Wei Dynasty. The wooden attic had been set outside of the cave and on the cliff once, now remained 12 beam holes on the upper level, it seemed the early attic is a 11 rooms wide. Both sides of the terrace is a three steps square tower separately, between the towers has tow windows, between the windows has a cave, the primary image is a crossing feet Maitreya. Both eastern and western sides have the door, the images of Amitabha, Guanyin and Mahasthamaprapta, the Holy triad of the west, carved on the north wall. The primary image of Amitabha is 10m high, sitting, the Bodhisattva on both sides. The cutting time can not be determined, Northern Wei, Sui, Tang and Liang are all possible times according to the style of the images. But the historical remains in the cave can provide information.
