The inscription of Yungang Grottoes into the World Culture Heritagelist in 2001 has brought protection and research of the Yungang Grottoes a newphase of development. Subject to the Convention on World Heritage Property andlaw and regulations on the relics protection, the Yungang Research Institute has intensifiedthe conservation, research and scenic development of the property in ascientific manner. This has brought into play the unique characteristics of thecultural relics according to the principle of a sustainable development andutilization. The complete creation of the grand scenic area of Yungang Grottoeshas required the careful planning and implementation of many projects over thepast years. This effort, as requested by the city Government, has witnessed theconstruction of a widened tourist route, expanded scenic area and the improvedenvironment. The Yungang Grottoes have taken a new look with a magnificentlyrestored relics group and a well planned route focusing on the imperial grottotemple and gardens, old shops, residences and architecture. Since itdemonstrates the prosperous history of the Northern Wei Dynasty, it attractsmore and more tourists from home and abroad.
Sofar the Yungang Grottoes Research Institute has made tremendous headway in theproperty protection, scenic area development, academic research and publicity.The principle of improving customer satisfaction is guiding the efforts tooptimize facilities and services and present the property in a better way. Allof these efforts have made the Yungang Grottoes a scenic area with convenientand improved facilities, beautiful environs and a sound management system and afirst class destination for tourists from home and abroad.
